From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The city will pay a $450,000 fine for allowing muddy water to escape a sports park last winter.

The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board had warned the city in the summer of 2002 that erosion control dams at the Big League Dream sports park wouldn’t hold up in a downpour. A few months later, more than 7.1 million gallons of silty water flowed into a nearby creek and wetlands.

The muddy plume stretched nine miles down Clover Creek and eventually overwhelmed the silt ponds built by the sports park’s contractor, the state said.
