Families of Russian children killed in an aircraft collision two years ago have reached a multimillion-dollar compensation deal with Switzerland’s air traffic control company.

“We’ve reached a settlement,” said Skyguide spokeswoman Rosemarie Rotzetter, adding that she could not immediately disclose the sum to be paid to the families of 28 children who died in the July 1, 2002, crash. A total of 71 people were killed.

The accident, over southern Germany, occurred in Swiss-controlled airspace, and investigators pointed to failings at Skyguide. Swiss newspapers have reported the settlement would be about $150,000 for each family.
