Lawyers for Martha Stewart say in new court papers that federal prosecutors missed warning signs that a government witness lied to jurors who convicted her of obstructing justice.

Prosecutors last month accused their own witness, Larry F. Stewart, the former chief forensic scientist for the U.S. Secret Service, of lying at Martha Stewart’s trial. She has asked U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum to toss out her conviction because of Larry Stewart’s alleged perjury.

In court papers, Martha Stewart’s lawyers say prosecutors should have known two weeks before the start of trial in January that Larry Stewart wasn’t credible. The court papers come in response to a government filing last week that urged Cedarbaum to uphold Martha Stewart’s conviction.
