Signature Record Set in Bid to Ban Gay Marriage

Opponents of same-sex marriage submitted a record number of signatures to place on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay nuptials, officials said in Salem.
The 244,587 signatures amassed by the Defense of Marriage Coalition -- more than twice the necessary amount -- was the highest number ever submitted for an initiative in Oregon’s history.
