Bush Staff Pay Range: Zero to $157,000

Among the 17 White House staff members who earn the top salary of $157,000 are national security advisor Condoleezza Rice, Press Secretary Scott McClellan and senior advisor Karl Rove, according to figures obtained by the Washington Post.

The average salary for a White House staffer was $67,075. But the list of 431 employees also showed that the lowest-paid workers, such as staff assistants, earn about $30,000.

And one employee, former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, receives no pay as the president’s envoy in charge of persuading other countries to forgive or restructure Iraq’s debt.

In comparison, members of the Senate and the House of Representatives make $158,100. The president makes an annual salary of $400,000, and the vice president earns $202,900.

Other White House staff members who earn the top pay of $157,000, according to the list as of June 12, are:

* Dan Bartlett, White House communications director.

* Andrew H. Card Jr., chief of staff.

* Stephen Friedman, chief economic advisor.

* Michael Gerson, assistant to the president for speechwriting.

* Alberto R. Gonzales, White House counsel.

* Stephen Hadley, deputy national security advisor.

* Joseph Hagin, deputy chief of staff.

* David Hobbs, assistant to the president for legislative affairs.

* Brett Kavanaugh, staff secretary.

* Lewis “Scooter” Libby, chief of staff to the vice president.

* Harriet Miers, deputy chief of staff.

* Dina Habib Powell, assistant to the president for presidential personnel.

* Margaret Spellings, assistant to the president for domestic policy.

* Frances Fragos Townsend, assistant to the president for homeland security.
