Official Escapes Second Assassination Attempt

The deputy chief minister of the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir escaped Muslim militants’ second attempt on his life in a week, police said, but a grenade meant for him killed five others and injured more than 40.
Mangat Ram Sharma was addressing a meeting in a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir state when the attack took place. No militant group claimed responsibility. Last week, rebels fired a grenade at his motorcade in Srinagar.
