Terror Down the Street

Share

Re “Girl, 6, Is Killed in Shooting While Out for an Ice Cream,” July 20: With a heavy heart I read about yet another child being killed by senseless and random gun violence and asked myself, when will we as a community declare “enough”? How many more families must feel the pain brought about by those who have declared war against civilized society before a united front is taken to get the guns and their users off the streets? There is nothing manly or heroic about killing the innocent. We would do well to remember that children are our future and that each time a child’s precious voice is forever silenced, we are that much closer to self-annihilation.

It wasn’t in Iraq, where pockets of normality are emerging but residents still are careful not to shop after dark when wild gunfire punctuates dreams. It was in Los Angeles County when 6-year-old Bryesha Limbrick, with Grandmother’s consent and Uncle’s company, went for ice cream. It was 8 p.m. and like Iraq, wild gunfire killed the dreams of Bryesha forever. Except for her immediate family and friends, this story will fade from memory while our homegrown terrorists run amok and fresh tears are dropped.
