Pat Tillman’s Death

Learning that former professional football player Pat Tillman was killed accidentally by our own forces in Afghanistan in April does not make his conduct any less heroic (May 30). But it demonstrates again the terrible gap between the grand narratives used to promote wars and the confused horror of war itself.

If parents who bought their boys Tillman jerseys will now tell them the rest of the story, maybe the next generation will understand why “peace on Earth” is a sacred value.
