California lawmakers introduced a bill to bar cellphone companies from sharing customers’ telephone numbers with telemarketers.

Four lawmakers introduced the bill in response to mobile-phone industry plans to compile a directory of cellphone numbers for about 75% of wireless customers nationwide. The lawmakers said the bill would preserve customer privacy and help hold down the cost of using cellphones.

The legislation would require cellphone firms to obtain written consent on a form separate from a service contract before a customer’s number could be listed in a directory.
