White Sox Prevail Over the Phillies in Slugfest

Juan Uribe and Paul Konerko each homered twice to help the Chicago White Sox overcome a pair of three-run homers by Jim Thome and beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 14-11, Tuesday night at Chicago.

Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee also connected for Chicago, whose six homers were one shy of the team record set in 1955 against Kansas City.

Uribe turned on a 3-and-2 pitch in the first inning for a two-run homer and had a solo shot in the second, his ninth homer this season. He also doubled and finished three for four with four runs and three runs batted in.

Chicago batted around in a six-run first off Ryan Madson, who got only two out in his first major league start. Philadelphia has lost six of its last eight games.

Mark Buehrle (6-1) gave up a three-run homer to Thome in the first and three runs in the second before settling down.

Thome tied a career high with six RBIs, getting another three-run shot in the eighth inning off Mike Jackson to make it 14-11. Cliff Politte relieved Jackson and got the final three out for his first save in as many chances.

Arizona 8, Baltimore 1 -- Randy Johnson (8-4) won his fifth consecutive start, giving up one run and three hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk at Baltimore.

Playing for the first time in an organized baseball game with his big brother on the same field, Arizona second baseman Scott Hairston was two for five with an RBI and a run scored.

Jerry Hairston, who started in left field for Baltimore, was two for three with a walk and scored the Orioles’ run.

Atlanta 4, Detroit 3 -- Danny Patterson (0-3) made a 10th-inning throwing error that allowed the go-ahead run to score after Mark DeRosa’s double at Detroit.

Chris Reitsma (2-1) pitched two shutout innings, and John Smoltz, playing for the first time in his home state, had a perfect 10th for his ninth save in 10 tries.

San Francisco 7, Tampa Bay 3 -- Michael Tucker hit a two-run homer, and Barry Bonds was one for two with two walks in his first visit to Tropicana Field to lead the Giants at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Jerome Williams (5-4) gave up one run and four hits in seven-plus innings.

Florida 7, Cleveland 5 -- Miguel Cabrera and Damion Easley each homered off the left-field foul pole with two out in the ninth inning to lead the Marlins at Cleveland.

Cabrera tied it off Jose Jimenez (1-4) with his 14th homer -- a shot that ricocheted off the top of the pole. Jeff Conine walked, and Easley followed by lining a shot that hit off the pole near the top of the wall.

Minnesota 2, New York Mets 1 -- Pinch-hitter Michael Cuddyer hit a game-winning RBI infield single to score Jacque Jones in the ninth and give the Twins the victory at Minneapolis. Tom Glavine gave up five hits and one run in eight innings for the Mets.

New York Yankees 2, Colorado 1 -- Javier Vazquez (7-3) won his fourth start in a row, retiring his first 13 batters, striking out six and giving up five hits in seven-plus innings at New York. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

Kansas City 4, Montreal 2 -- Rookie Zack Greinke (1-1) pitched seven shutout innings for his first major league victory, and Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer at Kansas City, Mo. Greinke, at 20 the youngest player in the majors, dropped his ERA in four starts to 1.73.

Oakland 10, Cincinnati 6 -- Ken Griffey Jr. failed to homer for the second game in a row, and Damian Miller tied a career high with five RBIs to lead the Athletics at Oakland.

Pittsburgh at Texas, ppd. -- The game involving the Pirates and Rangers at Arlington, Texas, was postponed because of rain. It will be made up Thursday night, which was a scheduled off-day for both teams.
