An ode to Ade

Thank you, Carina Chocano, for your lovely testimonial to Adriana La Cerva (“Heartless Hit,” June 4). You captured her essence so well. I was surprised at my reaction to her demise. After all, it’s only a show, not reality, but looking at reality these days, it seems safer somehow to lose oneself in a show.

Goodbye Ade, we’ll miss you.

Adriana the moral heart of “The Sopranos”? The lady attached herself to, arguably, the worst reprobate on the show with no sense of why: The guy was not only a conceited screw-up, not to mention a drug and alcohol addict, he beat her silly numerous times without any provocation. She betrayed him and others over the course of a couple of years. Sure it gave her ulcers; fear of death will do that to you. She was about to sleep with Tony after a few moments of his patting her on the head; only a lucky meeting with a raccoon on a dark road prevented it. Even in a show with its own unusual set of weird if consistent morality, she was an ethical failure. What show have you been watching, hon?

For those of us who grieve Adriana’s inevitable demise, it is salve for our wounds to have the gentle heroine compared to Antigone. It articulates the depth of our tumult in the face of immense tragedy.
