Rebuilt WTC site will pass on N.Y. opera

The New York City Opera, considered a frontrunner to take up residence at the rebuilt World Trade Center site, has lost out to three smaller arts groups and a new museum celebrating freedom.

The Joyce International Dance Center, the Signature Theatre and the Drawing Center -- three existing entities -- and the Freedom Center museum were chosen by city and state officials from among six finalists. More than 100 arts organizations had vied to be part of the rebirth at ground zero.

Currently housed at Lincoln Center, the City Opera had proposed a $291-million, 2,200-seat hall. But the largest performance space will instead be a 1,000-seat theater for dance.
