Hearst Ranch Deal

Re “Hearst, State Tentatively Agree to Coastal Land Preservation,” June 5: Now that the state has reached a tentative agreement with the Hearst Corp. for its 82,000-acre Hearst Ranch, there is no reason why details should not be released to the public now.

Hearst is looking for $95 million of taxpayers’ money in exchange for which it would build mansions and a hotel and sell the public 1,400 acres of Central California coastline. If the ranch is truly protected, this could be a wonderful legacy for future generations, but the devil is in the details.

The sooner the public gets a chance to read the fine print, the better chance there is for a true conservation agreement to emerge from this deal.
