Fever Stops Liberty Streak
The New York Liberty’s winning streak ended at six games with a 72-68 loss to Indiana in front of 10,510 Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
The Fever (4-3), responsible for both Liberty (6-2) losses, trailed by 13 points early in the second half. Indiana’s Tamika Catchings scored four of her 17 points in the last 14 seconds.Becky Hammon had 22 points to lead the Liberty, who lost for the first time since dropping the season opener at Indiana -- 69-67 on May 21.
Detroit 74, Washington 60 -- The Mystics (2-5) had a one-point lead, at 60-59, with 4:42 left, but did not score again in a loss to the Shock (4-3) in front of 13, 423 at Washington. The Mystics’ Chamique Holdsclaw had 20 points and 11 rebounds but declined interviews, saying: “I have nothing good to say.”
Charlotte 59, Phoenix 51 -- The Sting (3-5) held off the host Mercury (4-4) in front of 6,914. Phoenix, led by Diana Taurasi’s 20 points, came within one point with 4:42 left, then missed its next six shots.
Seattle 68, Connecticut 63 -- Lauren Jackson’s 22 points led the Storm (5-2) over the Sun (3-5) in front of 7,012 at Seattle.
