Windsor Shows Why He Is Fullerton’s Ace

At last check, Cal State Fullerton pitcher Jason Windsor is still a human being. The rest of college baseball might be thinking otherwise.

Windsor continued his remarkable string of performances in the first game of the best-of-three NCAA super-regional Saturday night as he threw eight scoreless innings in the Titans’ 9-0 victory over Tulane at Fullerton’s Goodwin Field.

But the confident Windsor wasn’t too shocked by his effort.

“This is what I expect when I throw strikes and I have my defense behind me,” Windsor said.

“I don’t expect anything less than zeros when I’m out there.”

The Titans are a win away from their 13th appearance in the College World Series.

In front of a spirited sellout crowd of 3,375, they used another brilliant effort from their ace and a potent offense to overwhelm the Green Wave, whose record fell to 41-20.

After falling to 1-4 with a loss against Long Beach State on April 2, Windsor has won his last 10 starts while compiling an 0.94 earned-run average.

In this postseason, the senior has given up one run in 23 innings.

Against a Tulane lineup that was batting .316, Windsor (11-4) gave up five hits while striking out seven without a walk.

He also lowered his career ERA to 1.90, which passed Curt Lewis on the school’s all-time list.

“He’s as good as we’ve seen, but we knew that coming in. He’s one of the premier pitchers in the country,” Tulane Coach Rick Jones said.

In the last three games, Fullerton (41-21) has scored 42 runs and has 60 hits. On Saturday, the Titans scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a convincing upper hand in the series.

Felipe Garcia and Bobby Andrews hit consecutive two-run doubles to cap the rally and knock out Tulane starter Brian Bogusevic.

Garcia and Clark Hardman each had three of the Titans’ 19 hits, 14 of which came off Bogusevic in 4 2/3 innings. Six others had two hits apiece.

Fullerton put the pressure on early.

Justin Turner led off the first with a double and one out later, All-American catcher Kurt Suzuki ripped an RBI triple off the base of the center-field wall.

P.J. Pilittere followed with a grounder to second base to bring in Suzuki.

Georgia 5, Georgia Tech 3 -- Jonathan Wyatt hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Bulldogs swept the Yellow Jackets at Atlanta to advance to the College World Series.

Miami 8, Florida 7 -- The Hurricanes scored six unearned runs on five errors at Coral Gables, Fla., to win the opening game of the best-of-three super regional.

Texas 10, Vanderbilt 2 -- The top-seeded Longhorns clinched their third straight trip to the College World Series with a sweep of the Commodores at Austin, Texas.

South Carolina 4, East Carolina 2 -- At Columbia, S.C., Matt Campbell pitched five shutout innings for the Gamecocks, who have won 17 of 19 and are one win away from their third consecutive trip to the College World Series.

Arkansas 4, Florida State 2 -- Charley Boyce held the Seminoles to one run in 5 2/3 innings and Jake Dugger homered and drove in two runs at Fayetteville, Ark., to send the Razorbacks to the College World Series.

Attendance was 10,027, an NCAA super regional record for an on-campus game.

Louisiana State 11, Texas A&M; 8 -- J.C. Holt and Ryan Patterson each homered and drove in three runs for the Tigers in Game 1 at Baton Rouge.
