West African Leaders to Intervene in Conflict
Three African leaders will mediate between Ivory Coast’s government and rebels, the president announced as fighting between rebel factions in two cities killed at least 22 people.
Laurent Gbagbo’s announcement came under pressure from his fellow African leaders. Tensions in Ivory Coast are threatening the regional economy and efforts being made by neighboring countries to recover from their own civil wars.
The presidents of Nigeria, Ghana and Togo would attempt to push peace efforts, Gbagbo said in an address on state TV.
