Giants’ Schmidt Runs His Win Streak to 10

Jason Schmidt pitched into the ninth inning to win his career-best 10th consecutive decision Friday night, leading San Francisco to its seventh consecutive victory, 6-4 over the Oakland Athletics.

Schmidt (10-2), coming off a one-hit gem against Boston last Sunday, hasn’t lost since dropping his first two starts of the season and is tied for the major league lead in wins.

He gave up four runs and five hits, struck out four and walked three in 8 1/3 innings before a sellout crowd of 48,189.

Scott Eyre came in after the right-hander gave up Scott Hatteberg’s two-run homer in the ninth and gave up a double to Erubiel Durazo. The Giants then brought in Matt Herges, who gave up a single to Bobby Crosby before getting Damian Miller to ground into a game-ending double play for his 20th save.

The Giants have won 11 of 12 to regain the lead in the National League West.

Schmidt was staked to a lead on back-to-back homers by Deivi Cruz and Pedro Feliz in the first. Cruz hit a three-run homer and Feliz followed with a solo shot, but all five Giant runs were unearned after a fielding mistake by the A’s.

Barry Zito (4-5) gave up one earned run -- on Michael Tucker’s sacrifice fly in the fifth -- but Oakland’s offense couldn’t do much against Schmidt.

Schmidt didn’t allow a baserunner past first until Miller’s sixth-inning double. Crosby hit a two-run homer for the A’s in the seventh, his 10th.

Zito hasn’t won since a 10-6 victory against Cincinnati on June 8, a span of three starts. After Feliz’s homer, Zito retired eight in a row before Feliz hit a fourth-inning single. Zito gave up seven hits in seven innings, struck out two and walked three.

Barry Bonds was hitless in two at-bats with two walks as the designated hitter. After walking on five pitches in the first, Bonds hit a fly to center in the third that was caught by Mark Kotsay against the wall. He walked on four pitches in the fifth, then flied out again in the seventh.

Bonds hasn’t homered in 11 games, a span of 28 at-bats.
