Ashado, Island Sand Ready for a Rematch

Share

Ashado and Island Sand, who finished one-two in the Kentucky Oaks on April 30, will have a rematch in today’s $300,000 Mother Goose at Belmont Park.

A Grade I at 1 1/8 miles, the Mother Goose attracted four other 3-year-old fillies -- Daydreaming, Stellar Jayne, Miss Coronado and Society Selection -- but attention will be focused on Ashado and Island Sand.

Owned by the Starlight Stables and trained by Todd Pletcher, Ashado, a daughter of Saint Ballado, hasn’t run since she won the Oaks by 1 1/4 lengths. A winner of six of nine in her career, she will break from Post 4 and be ridden by John Velazquez.

Since her runner-up try at Churchill Downs, Island Sand made a successful Belmont debut, taking the Acorn by nearly two lengths June 4. Worse than second only once in eight starts for trainer Larry Jones, the Tabasco Cat filly will be ridden by Terry Thompson.

Society Selection will have a new rider today after finishing second as the 2-1 favorite in the Acorn. Edgar Prado takes over for Jorge Chavez at the request of owner-breeders Irving and Marjorie Cowan.

Race of the day: Laura’s Lucky Boy, a winner of three consecutive races on grass for trainer Jason Orman, is the 4-5 morning line favorite in today’s $150,000 Cinema Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park. Mike Smith will ride the 3-year-old son of Theatrical for Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable LLC. His rivals include Chubasco Red, Whilly, Greek Sun, who is unbeaten in two starts for owner Peter Angelos and trainer Bobby Frankel; Kilgowan and the Jim Cassidy-trained entry of Blofeld and Unrivalled.

One for the road: Boscobelle adds blinkers in his second start for trainer Mike Hushion and can beat an extremely weak field of New York-bred maidens in today’s fifth at Belmont Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Ulterior Motives in the fifth, Sparkling Forest, M.A. Fox and Boston Gold in the sixth and Absolute Nectar, The Dempsey Look and Conceal The Deal in the seventh.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 4/113. Money: Previous day/meet total: $22.40/$651.60. Total money bet: $808.
