About half a million people took to the streets in Paris in an annual gay pride parade, urging the conservative French government to safeguard homosexual rights as the country debates same-sex marriages.

This month, the government temporarily suspended Noel Mamere, a Green mayor who conducted France’s first same-sex marriage. Justice Minister Dominique Perben declared the wedding invalid.

In Germany, meanwhile, a crowd estimated to number at least 300,000 marched in Berlin’s gay pride parade.
