The Defense Department last week also identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Marvin Best, 33, of Prosser, Wash.; staff sergeant, Marine Corps. Best was killed June 20 in hostile action in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Pedro Contreras, 27, of Harris, Texas; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Contreras was killed Monday in hostile action in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Charles A. Kiser, 37, of Cleveland, Wis.; staff sergeant, Army Reserve. Kiser was killed Thursday when an explosion occurred near his convoy in Mosul, Iraq. He was assigned to the 330th Military Police Detachment, Army Reserve in Sheboygan, Wis.

Juan Lopez, 22, of Whitfield, Ga.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Lopez was killed Monday in hostile action in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Jason N. Lynch, 21, of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; private first class, Army. Lynch was killed June 18 by small-arms fire in Buhriz, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division in Bamberg, Germany.

Patrick R. McCaffrey, 34, of Tracy, Calif.; specialist, Army National Guard. McCaffrey was killed Tuesday when enemy forces ambushed his ground patrol in Balad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 579th Engineer Battalion, Army National Guard in Petaluma, Calif.

Deshon E. Otey, 24, of Hardin, Ky.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Otey was killed Monday in hostile action in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Tommy L. Parker Jr., 21, of Cleburne, Ark.; corporal, Marine Corps. Parker was killed Monday in hostile action in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Gregory V. Pennington, 36, of Glade Spring, Va.; staff sergeant, Army. Pennington was killed Monday when his camp in Baghdad came under mortar attack. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Andre D. Tyson, 33, of Riverside; lieutenant, Army National Guard. Tyson was killed Tuesday when enemy forces ambushed his ground patrol in Balad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 579th Engineer Battalion, Army National Guard in Petaluma, Calif.

Russell P. White, 19, of Dagsboro, Del.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. White was killed June 20 in a noncombat-related incident at Camp Bulldog in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
