Narrow Race for NL Shortstop

St. Louis shortstop Edgar Renteria leads Houston’s Adam Everett by only six votes in fan voting for the July 13 All-Star game at Houston.

Renteria (986,688) overtook Everett (986,682) in the race for the National League’s starting shortstop in totals released Monday.

Voting ends June 30.

In the American League, the Yankees’ Hideki Matsui moved past Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki and New York’s Gary Sheffield into the third spot among outfielders.

In the National League, Met catcher Mike Piazza, Cardinal first baseman Albert Pujols, Astro second baseman Jeff Kent and Cardinal third baseman Scott Rolen maintained strong leads.

Giant outfielder Barry Bonds remained the NL’s top vote-getter. The Reds’ Ken Griffey Jr. and the Cubs’ Sammy Sosa are also in position to start.

On the AL side, Ranger second baseman Alfonso Soriano leads all players with 2,333,795 votes. Three Yankees, first baseman Jason Giambi, shortstop Derek Jeter and third baseman Alex Rodriguez, lead at their position. Detroit’s Ivan Rodriguez leads at catcher.

In the outfield, Matsui joined the Angels’ Vladimir Guerrero and Boston’s Manny Ramirez as possible starters.

Kansas City put third baseman Joe Randa on the 15-day disabled list because of a knee injury.... Florida called up outfielder Chris Aguila from triple-A Albuquerque and designated pitcher Toby Borland for assignment.... Milwaukee activated third baseman Wes Helms from the disabled list and sent infielder Jeff Liefer to triple-A Indianapolis.... Tampa Bay traded infielder Jose Bautista to Kansas City for cash.
