New Suspension Bridge Too Noisy for Neighbors

Months after they welcomed the new $500-million Carquinez suspension bridge with cheers and champagne, residents are now complaining about noise.
They say the bridge, which is three to four decibels higher than the steel bridge it replaced, is too loud. The noise level in surrounding neighborhoods ranges from 67 to 75 decibels -- comparable to the sound of a vacuum cleaner, according to Caltrans.
