Effort to Penalize Tuition Hikes Reconsidered
A Southern California congressman who roiled higher education officials by introducing a bill that would impose financial penalties on colleges that imposed big tuition increases offered to withdraw the controversial provision.
Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita), chairman of a House subcommittee that oversees higher education, said he would eliminate the financial penalties from his pending “college affordability” bill if higher education leaders pledged to continue their commitment to fighting excessive tuition increases.
