Keeping Uzis Off the Gun Store Shelves

Share

Re “A Wall of Firepower,” editorial, March 4: President Bush promised to support extending the assault weapons ban. But given the opportunity, he opted for a “clean bill” of immunity for the gun industry or nothing. Apparently, gay marriage presents a greater threat to the United States than the possibility, as your editorial suggests, of being able to easily pick up an Uzi at a gun store. Or even of picking one up at a gun show, where background checks are not required.

Americans support sensible gun legislation. My hat is off to California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and the other senators who stood up to the gun lobby by supporting the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole.

You state ominously that if “the 10-year-old assault gun ban expires in September, look for Uzis at a gun store near you.” That wild assertion ignores the fact that Uzis have been banned by state law for quite some time now, and will under no circumstances be appearing in local gun stores.
