Nichols’ Attorneys Ask Jury Candidates for a Fair Trial
McALESTER, Okla. -- Attorneys introduced Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry L. Nichols to prospective jurors Monday and asked them to give him a fair trial on state murder charges that could send him to death row.
Nichols, already serving a life sentence on federal charges in the deaths of eight law enforcement officers, is accused of 161 counts of murder in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
“Make sure that he receives a fair trial from each of you,” lead defense attorney Brian Hermanson said as Nichols stood at the defense table.
The defense began a second week of jury selection Monday by asking one prospective juror what she remembered seeing on television after the April 19, 1995, bombing.
“Mostly they were showing the building and the people scattering and running,” she said. She also remembered Timothy J. McVeigh being accused of the crime.
McVeigh was convicted on federal murder charges and executed in June 2001.
