Slaves’ Descendants Given Title to Land

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited Brazil’s largest community of runaway-slave descendants and handed them the title to their land.
Lula, the first Brazilian president to visit the Kalunga community, flew by helicopter to the mountainous brushland where the community has existed in isolation for 300 years. The Kalunga community is just 250 miles from the capital, Brasilia, but is accessible only by river and dirt track.
