Mike Piazza reached two significant milestones at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night. He tied Carlton Fisk for most homers by a catcher and passed Joe DiMaggio on the all-time list. However, only knowledgeable baseball fans knew it, as the Dodgers failed to acknowledge it on their message board. Very classy.

Jackie Robinson achieved success through merit, not the color of his skin. Therefore, it is incomprehensible that Jackie’s daughter is advocating the advancement of African Americans based exclusively on race rather than merit [Dodger Report, April 26].

Her call for Major League Baseball officials to approve and recruit a black owner (simply for the sake of having one) stands in direct contrast to the groundbreaking efforts of her father 57 years ago. Her own statement that says, “An owner’s primary responsibility must be to field the best possible team,” exemplifies her flawed thinking.

When, at last, there is an African American voted into the rarefied circle of team ownership, let us hope the deed is based upon his/her attributes and abilities, rather than heritage.

This is an open letter to all the meatheads who have been writing the Dodgers’ obituary over the past several months. I am incredulous over the whining and gnashing of teeth about how the McCourts are ruining the Dodgers. I have never cared about the owners, players, managers, coaches, or any other peripheral element. I just want to know if they’re winning, and aren’t they in first place, you nits?
