Painting the Town

Share

Hand-painted signs are a folk art gold mine the world over, and Southern California is no exception. In Latino neighborhoods of East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Pacoima and Long Beach, religious painting, pop art and other styles blend in the colorful images and murals adorning high-rises and lunch trucks, carnicerias and shops. The work of local masters Ulises and Leocadio Hernandez, Hector and Levi Ponce, Jesus “Chuy” Vasquez and Hong Lim Lee is celebrated in “Productos Latinos: Sign Painters of Los Angeles,” Craft and Folk Art Museum, 5814 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 937-4230, www.cafam.org. Through July 18.
