WWII ‘Rubble Women’

I agree with George Paulikas’ May 2 letter. I lived through the war in Germany. When Berlin was bombed out, almost 100%, the women went into their husbands’ closets, took out any suitable pants, grabbed some tools and started cleaning up the city. They were well known all over the country as the “Truemmerfrauen,” which translates as “rubble women.” There is a monument in Berlin in memory of these brave women. The Germans did not wait for handouts from the Americans. They were glad that the war had ended and they contributed to the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) that followed.
