Valkyries prepare to ride to rock fans

LONDON — Into the thrashing, dancing and mud-slinging madness of Britain’s outdoor Glastonbury Festival next month will crash the sounds of high culture.
Wagner’s soaring “Ride of the Valkyries” will echo across 900 acres of field at the country’s largest open-air event, usually host to thunderous rock bands and techno dance acts. This year’s lineup includes Paul McCartney, Oasis and Muse.
The English National Opera will perform Act 3 of “The Valkyrie,” complete with 90-piece orchestra and 11 soloists, hoping to reach an audience who would not normally go to the opera.
