A high school senior was arrested Monday on charges he used a slingshot to shatter office windows that thousands believed bore the image of the Virgin Mary.

Kyle Maskell, an 18-year-old who was raised in foster homes and described by police as angry at the world, was charged Monday with criminal mischief and jailed on $10,000 bail.

The image he is accused of destroying was first noticed days before Christmas in 1996. Within weeks, it drew almost half a million visitors.

Glass experts believe the image, standing almost 60 feet high and extending across nine panels, was created by corrosion of metallic elements in the glass’ coating.

The top three panes, containing an image that appeared to be Mary’s veiled head, were destroyed in March, apparently by ball bearings fired by a slingshot.

Police said Maskell had a run-in with the law before and has lived in at least two foster homes. They declined to elaborate on the previous charge.
