2 Cities OK Putting Road Tax on Ballot
Council members in two Ventura County cities have voted to support placing a half-cent sales tax on the November ballot.
The estimated $50 million raised annually from the tax would be used for highway improvements.
Fillmore on Tuesday and Camarillo on Wednesday recommended that county supervisors ask voters to decide the issue in the fall. They directed their request through the Ventura County Transportation Commission, which must get approvals from five of the county’s 10 cities, representing at least 50% of the county’s population. Fillmore and Camarillo account for 11% of the population.
Fillmore’s vote was unanimous, while the Camarillo council voted 4 to 1.
City councils in Santa Paula and Simi Valley will consider the issue Monday.
If approved by a two-thirds vote in November, the tax would last for 30 years.
