Sundance fest going global
The Sundance Film Festival, the premier showplace for independent movies in the United States, plans to add competitions for best international films and documentaries at its annual January event.
In previous years, some of the independent film arena’s most talked-about movies -- such as New Zealand’s “Whale Rider” -- were unable to compete for Sundance’s coveted best feature and documentary film honors, which were given only to U.S. films.
Sundance 2005, which takes place Jan. 20-30 in Park City, Utah, will put 16 movies in a World Cinema Dramatic Competition and 12 films in a World Cinema Documentary Competition. Separate juries for each group will be made up of U.S. and international filmmakers.
