Schmidt’s One-Hitter Leads Giants to Win

Jason Schmidt of the San Francisco Giants pitched a career-best one-hitter with 13 strikeouts Tuesday night at Chicago, beating the Cubs, 1-0.

He gave up an infield single to Michael Barrett in the fifth. He retired the last 13 batters to cap his sixth career shutout and 14th complete game.

“It was fun to be a part of,” catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. “It was awesome. It was one of the best performances I’ve ever been a part of.”

Too bad for Schmidt it came on the same night Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game.

“That’s all right,” Schmidt said. “He threw a perfect game. That’s well-deserved. I’m happy for him. I can’t wait to go back and watch the highlights.”

Schmidt (3-2) never allowed a runner to reach second base and walked only one.

Barry Bonds, in the lineup after sitting out because of back spasms, scored as the Giants ended a four-game losing streak.

New York 5, St. Louis 4 -- Kaz Matsui tied the score with a two-out, broken-bat single in the ninth inning, and Cliff Floyd followed with a game-winning single at New York.

Houston 9, Florida 2 -- Lance Berkman homered and had four of Houston’s 15 hits at Miami.

Colorado 8, Cincinnati 3 -- Jeromy Burnitz and Matt Holliday hit consecutive homers in the second inning and in the seventh at Cincinnati.

Montreal 3, Milwaukee 2 -- Zach Day won for the first time in more than three weeks, and the Expos brought their winning streak to San Juan, Puerto Rico, defeating the Brewers for their fourth consecutive victory.

San Diego at Pittsburgh, ppd. -- The game was rained out and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader today.

Cub outfielder Sammy Sosa has a sprained ligament in his lower back and is probably headed to the disabled list. He was examined by Dr. Michael Schaefer, the Cubs’ orthopedic specialist, and tests revealed the sprained ligament.... Florida right-hander A.J. Burnett pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball in his first rehabilitation start since reconstructive elbow surgery last year.
