All 435 House seats and 34 of the 100 Senate seats were at stake Tuesday. In the current Congress, Democrats hold 205 seats and have the support of the House’s only independent, Bernard Sanders of Vermont. In the Senate, Republicans hold 51 seats and Democrats 48, with one independent. Republicans increased their margin in the House by several seats and netted four in the Senate. The GOP won Senate seats vacated by Democrats in Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina and North Carolina. In addition, Minority Leader Tom Daschle was defeated in South Dakota. Democrats took Republican seats in Illinois and Colorado.

Medical malpractice: A measure to impose caps on awards or attorney fees in medical malpractice cases passed in Florida and Nevada; measures were narrowly defeated in Oregon and Wyoming.

*U.S. Senate, Louisiana: Republican Rep. David Vitter defeated four Democrats, avoiding a December runoff election. Vitter is the first Republican since Reconstruction elected to the Senate from Louisiana. Vitter, a Rhodes scholar and Harvard graduate, replaces retiring Democratic Sen. John B. Breaux.

U.S. House, Illinois: Democratic businesswoman Melissa L. Bean defeated Republican Rep. Philip Crane. Crane is the House’s longest-serving Republican, having been first elected in 1969 in a special election to fill a vacancy created when the current secretary of Defense, Donald H. Rumsfeld, left Congress to serve in the Nixon administration.

U.S. Senate, Colorado: Democratic Atty. Gen. Ken Salazar defeated beer baron Pete Coors, for a seat vacated by Republican Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Salazar was one of two Hispanic Senate candidates. Republican Mel Martinez, the former Housing and Urban Development secretary, was in a close battle in Florida to win the seat of retiring Democrat Bob Graham.

State minimum wage: Florida and Nevada voters approved a $1-an-hour increase in the state minimum wage, to $6.15, $1 higher than the federal minimum wage.

Marijuana: Montana became the 10th state to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. A measure in Oregon to expand its existing medical-marijuana program was defeated. Alaska rejected a measure to legalize marijuana.

Colorado electoral votes: Voters rejected a ballot measure that would have changed the state’s winner-take-all electoral vote system to one that would allocate the nine electoral votes in proportion to the popular vote.

Gay marriage: Eleven states approved constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriage: Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah. None of the states allow gay marriage now. The proposed amendments in Mississippi, Montana and Oregon referred only to marriage; the measures in the remaining states called for a ban on civil unions as well.

U.S. Senate, South Dakota: Former Republican Rep. John Thune edged out Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, making the latter the first party leader turned out of office since 1952. Thune won by 4,500 votes out of a total of nearly 400,000 cast. The con-test cost more than $26 million, with the candidates spending more than $50 apiece on the state’s 502,000 registered voters.
