The United States has recognized the Balkan nation of Macedonia under its constitutional name, the Republic of Macedonia, over Greek objections.

Athens argues that the name implies territorial claims because Greece’s northern province is also called Macedonia.

The republic had joined the United Nations under the name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” to sidestep Greek objections.
