The rational right

If the people interviewed in Robin Abcarian’s article represent the rational, “thinking” wing of the Republican party [“It’s a Deeper Shade of Red,” Nov. 10], we’re in deeper trouble than I thought. Using words like trust, integrity and compassion in connection with this president confirms to me that pro- and anti-Bush factions are living in separate universes.

I’m glad the Eli Lilly executive doesn’t agree that the nation is polarized, but perhaps she should talk to some of the millions who are unemployed, gay, without healthcare, or grieving the loss of loved ones in the Iraq war. They might feel differently. But then again, one of the things they admire in President Bush is his steadfastness even in the face of contrary evidence, so I guess it all makes sense.
