POW/MIA Memorial Gets National Status
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Congress on Wednesday designated Riverside National Cemetery’s Prisoner of War/Missing in Action memorial a national memorial.
In an announcement, Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Corona) said, “Many of our national monuments and memorials are located east of the Mississippi, making them extremely inaccessible to people who live out on the West Coast.”
The cemetery is expected to become the largest in the system in less than five years, with 1.4 million honored veterans, surpassing the better known Arlington National Cemetery.
