SUV Loopholes

Share

Re “Trouble Follows Close Behind,” Oct. 6: How much evidence do we need that SUVs are bad for our society on every conceivable measure? They waste gas, which leads to our subservience to OPEC. They pollute excessively. They roll over. As this article points out, their lack of federal regulation for bumper height means tailgating SUVs are more dangerous and costly than cars.

Tax and regulatory subsidies artificially tilt the market in favor of SUVs. These loopholes, originally intended to assist small businesses in purchasing work vehicles, lead directly to the costs and dangers to society listed above, and must be closed for everyone but the businesses that actually need these trucks.
