Edward McAteer, 78; Founded Conservative Religious Roundtable

Edward McAteer, 78, the founder of the Religious Roundtable, a conservative Christian group, died Oct. 6 after collapsing at his home in Memphis, Tenn. The cause of death was not announced, but McAteer was being treated for cancer.

A retired district sales manager for the Colgate-Palmolive Co., McAteer founded the Religious Roundtable in 1979. The group, which took its strongest positions against abortion and pornography, spurred the national political activities of conservative Christians.
