Rather anchors CBS coverage

CBS News, which is waiting while outside investigators finish their inquiry into what went wrong with a “60 Minutes” report on President Bush’s Texas Air National Guard service that used unverifiable documents, said Wednesday that Dan Rather will anchor the network’s election night coverage Nov. 2.

Rather also anchored the “60 Minutes” report and became the focal point of the ensuing criticism, and there had been speculation about whether he would anchor election results if the investigators were critical of his role in the controversial report.

A CBS News spokeswoman said the network doesn’t know if the inquiry will be finished before the election. CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves suggested to investors last week that it wouldn’t be.
