Women’s Sports Must Pay Their Way
David Wharton’s story about budget troubles [Oct. 16] is really a harbinger of more to come.
Wharton notes that the women’s programs at both UCLA and USC run significantly in the red (UCLA women’s revenue $789,704 with expenses of $8.3 million, USC women’s revenue $762,474 with expenses of $8.9 million).
When one notes the mandates for more women to compete in sports, with no concern about the costs of doing so, the question that must be asked is, how long are sports that are a significant drain on limited resources to be kept in the name of being politically correct, or gender balanced?
If women’s sports are to be taken seriously, there will have to come a point when they must face fiscal responsibility.
