College Football: It’s All Geek to Him

Share

Each week the BCS rears its ugly head. First of all, how does USC drop in the computer polls after shutting out Washington, 38-0? I guess the geeks thought they’d win 76-0.

Anderson & Hester’s explanation for ranking Miami ahead of USC was because they claim Miami played better teams. Miami has played two ranked teams, Florida State and Louisville. SC has played three; Cal, Arizona State and Virginia Tech. Three teams ranked to two? Guess the geeks didn’t take math in school.

It’s apparent that each week the computer polls fluctuate to keep interest in the standings. Case in point, this letter. However, doesn’t it seem obvious that there is some funny business going on?

The UCLA defense gives up 28.4 points a game, nearly 41 a game to the only three teams on the schedule with a pulse, and 93 in the last two weeks. UCLA ranks 108th (out of 117 schools) in the nation in total defense, giving up 452 yards a game (or twice what Arizona State got against USC before hanging 536 on the Bruins).

So imagine my surprise when I read in your Oct. 26 “UCLA Report” that Coach Karl Dorrell praised the defense for its effort against ASU.

Leave your MasterCard at home. This is priceless.
