Texas Christian Wins a Wild One

Peter LoCoco kicked a 47-yard field goal in the second overtime Thursday night, giving Texas Christian a 48-45 victory over Northwestern at Fort Worth.

Northwestern trailed by 14 points and rallied to tie the score three times. The last rally came with 13 seconds left when Brett Basanez’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Herbert forced overtime.

But Brett Huffman missed five field goals for the Wildcats, including his two attempts in overtime. Basanez had a career game, throwing for a school-record 513 yards.

No. 20 Utah 41, Texas A&M; 21 -- Alex Smith threw for three touchdowns, rushed for two more and finished with 435 yards of offense as the Utes cruised past the Aggies at Salt Lake City.

Smith threw for a personal-best 359 yards as Utah avenged its only nonconference loss of last season. Smith completed 21 of 29 passes and topped his 340-yard passing performance last year against Oregon.

Arizona State 41, Texas El Paso 9 -- Andrew Walter passed for three touchdowns and the Sun Devils spoiled the debut of Miner Coach Mike Price.

Boston College 19, Ball State 11 -- Will Blackmon returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to lead the Eagles to victory before a stadium-record 23,718 at Muncie, Ind.

Eastern Michigan 37, Buffalo 34 -- Matt Bohnet completed 11 of 20 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 92 yards at Ypsilanti, Mich., as the Eagles held off the Bulls to win a Mid-American Conference opener.
