Washington Is Upset by Fresno State, 35-16

James Sanders and Richard Marshall returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Brian Morris took a fumble in for another score, leading Fresno State to a 35-16 victory over Washington in the opener for both teams Sunday at Seattle.

The Bulldogs of the Western Athletic Conference broke open a 7-7 halftime tie to upset the Huskies of the Pacific 10.

Washington was unable to answer a big off-season question -- how to replace record-setting quarterback Cody Pickett, who is now with the San Francisco 49ers.

Junior Casey Paus started, but Coach Keith Gilbertson had promised that sophomore Isaiah Stanback would play quite a bit. They both demonstrated they will need a lot more practice.

Paus, the brother of former UCLA quarterback Cory Paus, completed 18 of 39 passes for 183 yards with three interceptions. Stanback completed one of five for 10 yards with one interception.

The Bulldogs were leading, 14-10, when Stanback dropped a handoff in the backfield on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Morris picked up the ball and ran 18 yards untouched to make it 21-10.

Paus returned for the next series, promptly throwing an interception that Sanders collected at Washington’s 29. Two plays later, Dwayne Wright scored on a 28-yard run to make it 28-10.

Marshall struck late in the contest, stepping in front of a pass from Paus and running 75 yards for the Bulldogs’ final touchdown.

No. 14 Tennessee 42, Nevada Las Vegas 17 -- Brent Schaeffer became the first Southeastern Conference freshman quarterback to start an opener in 59 years, running for one touchdown and throwing for another to lead the Vols at Knoxville, Tenn.

Erik Ainge, another freshman, passed for two touchdowns. Georgia’s John Rauch in 1945 was the last true SEC freshman to start a season opener.

The freshmen fared better in their collegiate debuts than Tennessee’s defense, which had trouble stopping UNLV’s rushing attack.

The Rebels, who have lost four of six openers under Coach John Robinson, rushed for 164 yards. Dominique Dorsey had 18 carries for 121 yards and a 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

No. 25 Purdue 51, Syracuse 0 -- Kyle Orton passed for 287 yards and a career-high four touchdowns at West Lafayette, Ind., to lead the Boilermakers to their first shutout in four years.

Orton, a senior, and the Purdue offense produced 571 yards and seven touchdowns. The Boilermaker defense held the Orange to 197 yards, forced four fumbles, and had three sacks and two interceptions.

Louisville 28, Kentucky 0 -- Playing at home, the Cardinals won the traditional opener with their archrivals for the fifth time in six years. It was their most lopsided win over the Wildcats since a 56-28 victory in 1999. The Wildcats failed to score in their season opener for the first time since 1962.

Rice 10, Houston 7 -- The Owls came within nine seconds of posting their first shutout in nine years as they won the traditional season opener against their cross-town rivals for the first time since 2001.

Kevin Kolb threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Marshall with nine seconds left, and the Cougars averted their first shutout since 2000.

Florida Atlantic 35, Hawaii 28 -- Doug Parker scored on a seven-yard run in overtime as the NCAA Division I-AA Owls rallied to upset the Warriors late Saturday night in Honolulu.

Florida Atlantic tied the score at 28-28 on Jared Allen’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Crissinger-Hill with 23 seconds left in regulation. The extra-point try was blocked.

Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang completed 38 of 66 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. The senior now has 13,116 career passing yards -- 1,916 shy of breaking the 13-year-old NCAA record of 15,031 set by Brigham Young’s Ty Detmer.
