Bush to Grant Special Trade Status to Iraqi Exports
President Bush said Tuesday that he intended to place Iraq on a list of countries that receive preferential treatment on goods exported to the United States, just as he had done for Afghanistan.
In January 2003, Bush added Afghanistan to the list of developing countries with preferred treatment on exports to the U.S.
The Generalized System of Preferences gives the president authority to cut tariffs to boost U.S. imports from countries that meet certain criteria.
GSP grants duty-free treatment to certain products from 140 developing countries and territories.
