NHL Union Proposal Is Rejected

NHL officials rejected a proposal by the NHL Players Assn. on Thursday, all but guaranteeing a lockout, which would begin when the collective bargaining agreement expires Wednesday at 9 p.m. Pacific Time.

No further meetings are scheduled.

“[NHL Commissioner] Gary Bettman’s concluding remarks were that we aren’t even talking the same language,” said Ted Saskin, the union’s senior director.

The union’s plan, similar to one offered last October, included a one-time 5% rollback in salaries, returning entry-level contracts to 1995 levels and a luxury tax. New to the deal was a revenue-sharing plan that “coupled with the luxury-tax levels is more closely aligned with recent NHL proposals in that area,” Saskin said.

NHL officials contend that such a system would fail under the league’s financial situation.

According to the NHL, its 30 teams lost $224 million last season. Players have opposed remedies they view as variations of a salary cap. In August, union officials rejected six proposals by the NHL.
