Einstein rolls over

Re “Four Institutions Find Right Formula for ‘Einstein’ Show” [by Scott Timberg, Sept. 14]: It’s a shame that Getty Trust President Berry Munitz didn’t sit in on a few mathematics classes during his tenure as California State University chancellor; he might have been a bit more accurate. Referring to the collaboration of four institutions on the Einstein exhibit opening at the Skirball Cultural Center, he observed, “The more people you add, the complications increase logarithmically, not mathematically.”

Logarithmic growth is by necessity mathematical and somewhat slow. He probably meant to say “increase exponentially, not arithmetically.” We hope he has some strong mathematical help with him there at the trust.
