Spector Faces a Murder Indictment, Attorney Says
A defense attorney for rock producer Phil Spector said Wednesday he believes the Los Angeles County Grand Jury has indicted his client on a charge of murdering actress Lana Clarkson.
Roger Rosen said that the prosecutor called him Monday afternoon and told him to bring Spector to a downtown Los Angeles courtroom next week but would not give a reason. Spector is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
“I’m very confident in my assessment that they have in fact indicted Phil,” Rosen said.
Grand jury indictments remain secret until the defendant is arraigned. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office would not confirm whether an indictment had been returned.
Spector was charged in November with killing Clarkson, a nightclub hostess, on Feb. 3, 2003, in his Alhambra mansion.
Spector has twice switched attorneys and is scheduled to return to court in December to have a date set for a preliminary hearing, when a judge would decide if there is enough evidence for a trial. But a grand jury indictment would eliminate the need for a preliminary hearing.
