Roddick Is Leading Man for U.S. Team

Andy Roddick will play Vladimir Voltchkov today to open the Davis Cup semifinal between the United States and Belarus.

Olympic silver medalist Mardy Fish was drawn Thursday to face Max Mirnyi in the second singles match. The doubles match in the best-of-five series is Saturday, with the reverse singles Sunday.

As of Thursday, the doubles teams were set to be twins Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo against Mirnyi and Alexander Skrypko. But Belarus captain Sergei Teterin said he would make a final decision on his pair after today’s matches.

It’s the first Davis Cup meeting between the U.S. and Belarus. The U.S. has won 31 Davis Cup titles, most recently in 1995. Belarus, which became independent in 1991, is in the semifinals for the first time.

Spain plays host to France at Alicante in the other semifinal. Carlos Moya will play Paul-Henri Mathieu, followed by Juan Carlos Ferrero against Fabrice Santoro.
